Head Judge: Beth Taylor, Norton, MA

Artistic

Judge: Judith H. Block, Bronx, NY

1st Place

Best In Class

Felicity

Owned by Sabrina Hundley, Midland, VA

This photo is stunning. Looks professional. I love the gerbil’s pose, darling expression, angle of face, and proximity to the pearls (which are placed asymmetrically to subtly frame the gerbil.). Very sophisticated.

2nd Place

HH Vergil

Owned by Cynthia Kurtz, Washington, DC

Photo by Donna Anastasi, Marshfield, MA

Such a creative composition and use of space! The adorable gerbil’s tail in front of the balloons helps unite the compositional elements, as does the slightly off center focal point of the gerbil, with the gerbil’s 3/4 view subtly leading us back to the other shapes. I love that the balloons are a variation on the circular shape of the well spaced cereal pieces. I love the placement of the balloons’ strings too.

3rd Place – Tie

Mrs Lovey Howell

Owned by Sabrina Hundley, Midland, VA

Adorable gerbil. Sweet face- I love how the gerbil emerges from the pink feather-fluff. I love the lighting, the glow, and coloration. The subtle, off center focal point works well. We are drawn into the picture.

This is SO adorable…what a moment captured! The compositional relationship between the two gerbils and ball is wonderful.I wish the subjects were larger- that there were less background space around the two gerbils and ball, though. Then it would have been perfect. But the subject is so darling it overcame my concern a bit in this case.

Honorable Mention

Prudence

Owned by Sabrina Hundley, Midland, VA

Adorable gerbil and props. Good composition and lighting. Made me smile!

Honorable Mention

Dewdrop

Owned by Donna Anastasi, Marshfield, MA

Such a sweet face on that gerbil. Good, off-center focal point (house with gerbil inside). Good there is more greenery on the right, reaching unevenly, three quarters of the way up, than is visible in the evergreen stems on the left. A lot going on, but it works. I like that two of the stems are in front of the gerbil.

Honorable Mention

Cornchip

Owned by Polly Weldon, Jacksonville, FL

Darling gerbil and slightly blurred bouquet in the background. I love how the curve of the gerbil’s tail and foot leads the viewer back into the picture, as does the angle fold line shadow of the towel.

Honorable Mention

ABC’s Icicle

Owned by Donna Anastasi, Marshfield, MA

Adorable gerbil and wonderful compositional relationship between the gerbil, love heart and bedding. Subtle off-center focal point of gerbil. All huge pluses. Alas, way too much background space. The subject gets a bit lost.

Cute idea- wonderful capturing of the gerbil standing on the mini-pumpkin. I like the sunlit areas/shadows of the pumpkins. The picture is tilting, though- strange angle.

HH Rebelle ABC

SO cute! It would be even better if the darling gerbil and refreshment stand were larger (less background) and slightly off center, not a “bull’s eye”.

Obsidian

Owned by Melanie Sanders

This looks like a painting, in the texture of the gerbil and the chiaroscuro light and dark. Creative! I wish, in this picture, there were a bit more background, though. Not a lot… just a bit more on the right.

Candids

I can’t tell if this guy is about to sneak out, or is just reaching out for a kiss. Either way, he is oh-so-adorable. Those little hands!

This little face just makes my heart melt. What a cutie coming out to visit.

Adorable photo. Looks like this one loves his strawberries.

1st Place

Masquerade, Snowy Day, Dew Drop, Rainy

Owned by Donna Anastasi, Marshfield, MA

An adorable little family, well-groomed and attractively photographed. One pup looks like Dad and the other looks like Mom!

2nd Place

Rarity, Rachel, and Renee

Owned by Catherine Cannon, Ruther Glen, VA

A sweet family picture, with little bed-heads poking out of the nest, and photographed at a good angle.

3rd Place

Clyde and Pups

Owned by Catherine Cannon, Ruther Glen, VA

Who can resist a big group of pups munching on grown-up gerbil treats? The pups’ faces are all towards the camera, too, a tricky feat. Mom must be very proud of her family.

Honorable Mention

Saphie and Sophie

Owned by Tammy Hubbard

Let me wrap my tail over your back. Two pretty burmese gerbils are cuddled up and someone’s stealing a kiss. This picture would have done well to be photographed at eye-level rather than from above.

Pups

Owned by Catherine Cannon, Ruther Glen, VA

Hello, little babies. Three little gerbils lined up and looking peaceful. Once their eyes open at about day 18, Mom and Dad will have their hands full!

Come and play hide and seek with us, and don’t forget the Cheerios! It probably took a while to get them both looking at the camera, and in focus, too.

We’ve worn out our Mom with all our rampaging around the cage. She’s looking for a snack and the TV remote now. Such cute little pups, and is Mom expecting some more?
